چکیده

Vasa vasorum (VV) are small arteries which penetrate the arterial wall both through the luminal surface (vasa vasorum internae) and the adventitia (vasa vasorum externae). Adventitial VV ramify into smaller vessels supplying the outer media layers. Venous VV are more numerous and also supply mainly the outer media. In humans, arteries containing less than 29 cellular layers or less than 0.5 mm diameter do not present VV.1,2 Thanks to microcomputerized tomography, tridimensional study of these vessels became possible,3,4 as well as microarteriography have enabled a more thorough understanding of their anatomy and distribution5 through the injection of a silicone polymer (Microfil®, Flow Tech, U.S.). VV seem to play a fundamental role in the physiopathology of the three acute aortic syndrome entities: aortic dissection, intramural hematoma (IMH), and penetrating ulcer. VV reactivity

Type A intramural hematoma in the setting of acute type B aortic dissection.

Type A intramural hematoma (IMH) is an uncommon entity, the pathophysiology of which is thought to be related to a contained hemorrhage within the medial layer of the aorta as a result of either rupture of the vasa vasorum or an atherosclerotic plaque. We present a case of type A IMH in the setting of acute type B aortic dissection with suspicion for malperfusion syndrome and discuss the treatm...

Aortic Intramural Hematoma Discovered During Coronary Bypass Surgery

170 Aortic intramural hematoma (AIH) is considered a precursor of aortic dissection. It is caused by vasa vasorum bleeding in the tunica media of the aortic wall. The incidence of AIH ranges from 3% to 53% of cases of acute aortic syndrome. The condition usually manifests as retrosternal pain with interscapular irradiation. It can progress to rupture or calcification, or it can regress. Aortic ...

Surgical treatment of intramural hematoma of the ascending aorta.

INTRODUCTION Intramural hematoma of the aorta presents potentially fatal condition developing as a result of a vasa vasorum rupture. It is a major risk factor for developing a frank aortic dissection. CASE OUTLINE A 65-year-old woman was admitted to our clinic for the second time, after her symptoms of chest pain and vertigo (with no electrocardiographic signs of myocardial infarction) hadn't...

The implication of vasa vasorum in surgical diseases of the aorta.

Vasa vasorum (VV) are microscopic vases that perfuse the vessel's wall; arteries and veins. Many recent researches support the opinion that VV have a significant role in aortic pathology. The VV, or 'the vessels of the vessels', form a network of microvessels that lie in the adventitia and penetrate the outer media of the host vessel wall. Although the importance of the VV in providing nutritio...
